Berlin High School Newspaper, The Redcoat Review,

Earns First-Place Award for Second Straight Year

The Redcoat Review, the Berlin High School student newspaper, earned a first-place award in the 2022 American Scholastic Press Association’s newspaper competition, for the second straight year.

The newspaper, which is written and edited by students, publishes four times a year and covers school, community and national events. The school submitted its first two issues of the school year to the national contest, which it had entered for the second time. The Redcoat Review earned 905 total points out of a possible 1000 points in scored areas such as content coverage, page design, editing and creativity.  See Recent Issues of the Redcoat Review

According to an ASPA judge, the Redcoat Review earned a perfect score in page design and editing.

“You have an excellent school newspaper, which shows the creativity and journalistic knowledge of your editors, reporters, writers, photographers...and advisor(s),” the judge wrote in a letter from the ASPA.

There are approximately 35 students in grades 9-12 who make up the staff for the Redcoat Review, which is run as a Berlin High School club that meets after school weekly under the guidance of advisors Rachel Rice, the school’s Library Media Specialist; and Donielle Joslyn and Lauren Masterson, who teach in the English department. Students brainstorm or pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, write rough drafts and edit based on feedback from their peers and their advisors. Photos, layout and page design are also student produced with guidance from the advisors.

The Redcoat Review produced four issues, including the first two which were judged in the competition.

The Redcoat Review is distributed electronically through the school’s content management system, Schoology, for all students and staff to enjoy as well as emailed to all staff members in the Berlin School District.
