Berlin High School Scholar Athlete Awards

Each year, two seniors from each member high school are selected to represent their school as the Connecticut Association of Schools – Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CAS-CIAC) Scholar-Athletes.  Selection criteria include exemplary academic and athletic careers; personal standards and achievements that are a model to others; and high levels of integrity, self-discipline, and courage.  Berlin High School is proud to announce that this year’s Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are Jacob Lindsay and Jenna Zup.  Both Jacob and Jenna are exemplary students and athletes who maintain a healthy, productive balance between academic and extracurricular activities so they can put their best efforts into all of their commitments.  Jacob and Jenna will be recognized as the Berlin High Scholar-Athletes during a virtual event that will be broadcast via local television in the near future.

Jenna Zup is a High Honors student who has participated in soccer and softball since middle school.  As a BHS varsity soccer athlete she has been named to the All-Academic Team, All-Conference Team, All-State Team, and the All Herald Team.  As a BHS varsity softball player Jenna has been named to the All-Academic Team as well as recognized as the Hartford Courant’s Athlete of the Week and the Fab 15.  Jenna has been captain of both the soccer and softball teams, and in fact was the first sophomore captain in the history of BHS softball.  She leads by example, but she is also the first to step in to cheer for or offer constructive feedback to her teammates.

Jenna gives back to her community and contributes her athletic skills and talents by volunteering to coach and facilitate annual clinics and camps.  She also helps manage the T Cop fundraising organization, volunteers at the local food pantry, and is a member of the Interact Club, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, and National Honor Society.  Her post-secondary plans include playing soccer and softball at the University of Saint Joseph in the fall, where she will pursue a degree in pharmacy.

Jacob Lindsay is a High Honors student who has played on the BHS varsity golf team all four years at Berlin High, serving as captain during senior year.  He has been named to the All-Academic, All-Conference,  All-State and All-New England teams.  He placed among top golfers in the Division II State Tournament and All State Championship and won the Stan Pisk Memorial Championship.  Outside of Berlin High Jacob has achieved many golfing accolades including two time Junior Club Champion at Shuttle Meadow Country Club and winning the Challenge Cup Cape Cod Junior Class which earned him a spot in the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship.  In addition to golf, Jacob has played tennis through Shuttle Meadow Country Club including competing in several events and tournaments.

Jacob has earned many academic accolades and is a member of National Honor Society, officer of Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, volunteers as a Writing Center tutor, is a Model UN Club officer, and member of Upbeat and Interact Club.  He contributes his athletic skills and talents as a mentor at Shuttle Meadow Country Club, aiding in the development of younger players.  Jacob and a few of his classmates developed the Centers for Technology Education, a non-profit whose primary goal is to provide technology assistance to the community.  Jacob’s postsecondary plans are to pursue a degree in chemical engineering while continuing with his passion for golf by competing at the collegiate level.

The Connecticut Association of Schools – Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CAS-CIAC) is the governing body for secondary school athletics and other interscholastic competition in the state of Connecticut.  The Scholar Athlete program is one of the longest running CAS-CIAC events, honoring standout senior student athletes since 1984.
