Mary Carroll-Kennedy Scholarship Recipient

Juliana Garcia-Chinchilla, a Berlin High School senior, has been named a recipient of the Open Choice Program Mary Carroll-Kennedy Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in 2002 in honor of Mary Carroll-Kennedy, the Open Choice Program’s founding director.  The award provides financial assistance to Hartford Region Open Choice students attending a two- or four-year college or university.
Juliana has distinguished herself as a dedicated, compassionate, and resilient young woman who has been actively involved in a variety of extracurricular and community activities during her tenure at Berlin High School, while pursuing a rigorous academic course load.  As a member of the BHS Student Art League, Juliana was selected to lead a significant group project.  She was also asked to be the key speaker at the 2021 Capitol Region Education Council’s (CREC) Youth Empowerment Summit (YES).  The YES program is a virtual workshop series for Hartford students to increase their understanding of equity, develop personal empowerment skills, and learn how to be effective advocates for themselves and others in their home and school community.
Juliana has consistently shown herself to be someone who is both trusted and respected by her peers and the faculty.  Mrs. Nascimento, her school counselor, stated, “It’s clear that Juliana is intrinsically motivated!  She is independent and possesses an incredible work ethic as well.  As someone with a true enthusiasm for learning, Juliana sets personal goals and fully commits to seeing them through.”

After graduation, Juliana plans to attend Central Connecticut State University.
