Berlin High School Scholar Athlete Awards

Each year, two seniors from each member high school are selected to represent their school as the Connecticut Association of Schools – Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CAS-CIAC) Scholar-Athletes.  Selection criteria include exemplary academic and athletic careers; personal standards and achievements that are a model to others; and high levels of integrity, self-discipline, and courage.  Berlin High School is proud to announce that this year’s Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are Jonathan D’Amore and Clare McGeever.  Both Jonathan and Clare are exemplary students and athletes who maintain a healthy, productive balance between academic and extracurricular activities so they can put their best efforts into all of their commitments.  Jonathan and Clare will be recognized as the Berlin High Scholar-Athletes at the annual banquet to be held at the Aqua Turf on Sunday, May 22.

Clare McGeever is a three season varsity athlete, participating in soccer, lacrosse, and basketball both at Berlin High and at the club level outside of the high school.  She has been named to All-Academic teams for all three sports and All-Conference for basketball and lacrosse.  She is co-captain of the lacrosse team and was named the Coaches Award winner.  She has been recognized as a Hartford Courant Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Year, and was on the CCC South Conference championship team for basketball.

Lee Memorial Foundation Club, Youth and Government, the Debate Club, and Unified Theater.  Clare is also a Coordinator in the BHS Upbeat program, Berlin’s peer leadership and community service program that brings over one-third of the student population together for the common goal of helping the community.  Clare will attend Bates College in the fall to pursue a political science degree and plans to play lacrosse.

Jonathan D’Amore is a three season varsity athlete who has been named to the All-Conference, All Courant, All-Herald, All-State, and All-Academic teams for football.  He was ranked second in Connecticut for total tackles as a sophomore and first as a senior.  He has also earned All-Academic honors for basketball and baseball.  He is involved in the local athletic community, coaching and volunteering Berlin youth football.

Academically Jonathan has excelled in a rigorous academic program, enrolling in many Advanced Placement and UConn Early College Experience courses.  He has earned High Honors status each year and been nominated to the Rho Kappa National Social Studies and National Honor societies.  He is a member of Unified Theater and the DECA Business Club, where he earned a leadership role with his competition team.  Jonathan plans to attend Bentley University in the fall where he will major in actuarial science and play football.
